The bone char problem

Some white and brown sugars sold in the United States are filtered through bone char, made from animal bones, during processing to whiten the final product. The bone char itself never ends up in the sugar, but it is part of the manufacturing chain, and that is enough for some vegans to avoid non certified sugar entirely in favor of organic, beet, or certified vegan alternatives.

Others in the community focus on direct harm and intention: no animal is raised or killed specifically to produce sugar, and bone char is a byproduct of an already existing system, not a driver of it. A third group stays strict at home while not interrogating every ingredient while eating out or traveling, prioritizing long term sustainability of the lifestyle over ingredient level perfection.
