Dr. Michael Klaper, a plant-based physician of more than 40 years, returns to Vegans Explore to discuss his new book, Moving Medicine Forward, and the message he wishes someone had told him in medical school.
Klaper's central argument is that the chronic diseases most doctors spend their careers treating, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune conditions among them, are largely reversible through diet, not permanent sentences. High blood pressure, he explains, often comes from arteries stiffened by an inflammatory, salt-heavy diet; a low-fat, whole-plant-food diet rich in potassium can dilate those arteries and bring pressure down, sometimes to the point where medication has to be reduced to avoid overcorrecting. The same principle applies to insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes, where clearing fat out of the cells reopens insulin receptors and can allow blood sugar, and medication, to come down.
Klaper's advice to the average listener is direct: come to your doctor prepared to ask how a condition can be reversed, not just managed, and push medical boards to include more nutrition education in board exams. His book, Moving Medicine Forward, released April 7, and is built from four and a half years of visiting the country's medical schools to deliver this message directly to the next generation of doctors.
