Fur, leather, wool, silk, and exotic skins spent decades as symbols of luxury. That equation is being rewritten, and vegan values are sitting at the center of the shift.
Investigative footage showing how animals were trapped, confined, and killed for fur, paired with sustained pressure from organizations like PETA and the Humane Society of the United States, made it harder for brands to claim ignorance. Gucci went fur-free in 2017, setting the tone for the luxury market, with Versace, Prada, and Burberry following shortly after. Once the biggest names in luxury made the switch, it removed the industry's last excuse that fur was somehow necessary for high fashion, and mid-range and fast fashion brands followed as consumer expectations shifted.
Polyurethane vegan leather was an early stand-in, but the newer generation of materials leans on cactus, pineapple leaves, apples, and mushrooms, along with mycelium leather grown directly from fungi. Recycled plastic and ocean waste are being turned into textiles for jackets, shoes, and bags, and lab-grown materials are emerging that replicate leather's structure without an animal in the supply chain. Stella McCartney is cited as an early leader proving ethics and aesthetics do not have to trade off against each other.
