A listener wrote in after an osteoporosis diagnosis asking how to strengthen her bones on a vegan diet. This is not medical advice, it is a starting point for the conversation to have with your own doctor.
Osteoporosis means porous bones, a condition where bones lose density and strength and become more likely to fracture. Many people do not know they have it until a simple fall or even a strong cough causes a break. It is most common in women after menopause, when declining estrogen speeds up bone loss. Bone is living tissue that constantly rebuilds itself, but as we age the balance between building and breaking down shifts, influenced by genetics, hormones, nutrient intake, movement, smoking, certain medications, and chronic stress.
Exercise supports bone health, but with an osteoporosis diagnosis it has to be approached carefully. Talk to your doctor or a physical therapist before starting anything new, since some movements can raise fracture risk, especially around the spine and hips. Once cleared, gentle low-impact options like walking, light yoga, or guided physical therapy can improve balance and support bone strength without added risk.
Always consult your doctor before changing your diet, supplements, or exercise routine. Focus on calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium, vitamin K2, and protein. Use high-quality vegan supplements when whole food alone is not enough. Stay active with low-impact, doctor-approved movement, and keep up with regular bone density scans. Osteoporosis is manageable, and a well-planned vegan lifestyle, paired with professional medical care, can absolutely support long-term bone strength.
