Every few years nutrition throws a curveball, and this time it's vitamin A5, a compound first described in scientific literature in 2018 that isn't yet officially recognized by bodies like the WHO or NIH, but fits many of the criteria used to define a vitamin.
Vitamin A5 isn't consumed directly, it comes from precursors the body converts into an active molecule, similar to how beta carotene becomes vitamin A. That active form interacts with RXR receptors, regulatory hubs that influence metabolism and energy balance, immune signaling and inflammation, cell growth and renewal, and nervous system function, which is why researchers treat it as its own category rather than folding it into traditional vitamin A.
The most significant dietary sources of vitamin A5 precursors are green leafy vegetables and certain root vegetables, spinach, kale, chard, parsley, and carrots stand out consistently in the research, with only small amounts found in animal foods. Long-term deficiency data doesn't exist yet since the compound is so newly identified, but researchers are particularly interested in a possible role in brain health, nerve protection, inflammation regulation, and cognitive aging. None of it is a treatment or a cure, and the takeaway is a familiar one: diets built around leafy greens and a variety of plant foods keep showing benefits even as science finds new reasons why.
