Dr. Angela Crawford on The Vegan Transformation: The Emotional Side of Going Vegan

Psychologist Dr. Angela Crawford spent four years surveying and interviewing vegans to understand what actually shifts emotionally and spiritually after someone goes plant-based, and turned the findings into her book The Vegan Transformation.

From a PBS Segment to Full Vegan

Crawford's own journey started with a PBS segment on injured meatpacking workers that got her thinking about where her food came from for the first time. She went vegetarian that week, then spent years easing out dairy and eggs before going fully vegan a little over six years ago, a decision she describes as finally committing to her own values instead of going along with what was easiest.

Seven Core Transformations

Crawford surveyed more than 350 vegans and conducted 75 in-depth interviews for the book, landing on seven recurring transformations, including values alignment, expanded compassion, health empowerment, and a deeper spiritual connection to the world. One interviewee's fibromyalgia resolved within a month of going fully plant-based, even though she'd gone vegan for the animals, not her health.

  • Surveyed more than 350 vegans and conducted 75 in-depth interviews for the book
  • Values alignment came up as the throughline behind every other transformation people reported
  • Recommends including yourself, not just animals and others, in your own "circle of care"
  • Cites Dr. Melanie Joy and Claire Mann as influences on the inner-work side of sustaining a vegan lifestyle

Her closing message: expand compassion not just to animals, but to people still finding their own path, vegan or not.
