Jacobo Garcia spent two years scouting South Florida before landing on Wynwood for Vgan Corner, a vegan market and sandwich bar built to pull in vegans and non-vegans alike.
Garcia previously ran a similar vegan market in Mexico before relocating to Miami. Vgan Corner pairs a small grocery with a simple panini and protein-shake bar, priced so that non-vegan neighborhood regulars grab a sandwich just as often as anyone shopping the shelves. Two-for-$17.49 panini deals have become a draw for people who never set out to try a vegan product.
Since opening, Garcia has run a Too Good To Go program, bundling four or five near-best-before-date items worth $25-30 for $5-7, plus an extra 10% off the rest of the store that visit. He's sold 150-180 bags so far, calling out that "best before" dates on vegan packaged goods are a labeling requirement, not a sign the product has actually expired.
Garcia stocks and actively promotes smaller Florida vegan makers, including Sonny Speaks' oxtails, Greenhouse's turkey, and an Ethiopian vendor's sambusas, and is lining up rotating pop-ups since the store has no kitchen ventilation for on-site cooking. An Art Basel event on December 3rd is planned with a live mural, a HIIT class, and several local food vendors.
Garcia's takeaway: a vegan-only store can't sustain itself on vegan shoppers alone, so the product has to be good enough that anyone in the neighborhood wants it.
