Why 31 Vegan Food Names Are Being Targeted

The European Union has provisionally agreed to restrict 31 meat-related terms, beef, pork, chicken, steak, ribs, bacon, tenderloin, from being used on plant-based and cultivated products. Sean A. Russell breaks down why the official reasoning doesn't hold up and what's actually being protected.

The Confusion Argument Doesn't Survive Scrutiny

Regulators frame the restriction as improving transparency, but a 20,000-person study in the Netherlands found 96% of consumers were not confused by plant-based meat labels, a result echoed in studies from Australia and elsewhere in Europe. If people aren't confused, the more plausible explanation is that this is about controlling familiar language, since "vegan bacon" is instantly understood while "smoky plant-based strips" introduces friction, and friction slows adoption.

Not Yet Final

The measure still needs final approval from EU governing bodies, and organizations are already calling for impact assessments and pushing back. The larger concern is precedent: once language like this is restricted in one place, other governing bodies may follow, making familiar plant-based names harder to find everywhere.
